J-F was a genius. The first time we played together was at a jam session in Prague, where he played as a member of the Don Cherry Quintet. It was after the music, we started to talk and together with Aldo Romano we became friends, because we had the same ideas about music. When i moved from east to west germany in 1966 i got in touch with Aldo and J-F, we did our first trio LP in January 1969, many more records followed until December 1997. (Triple Entente) Around 1970 Daniel Humair joined the trio and ever since we played as Trio Kühn/Humair/Jenny-Clark and always stayed in touch. When I returned to Paris in 1984 it was clear to reactivate the trio. I think this trio was for us musicians the trio of our life. I miss him. For me, he was always the best bassist in the world. He could play any kind of music with elegance and taste, timing perfect. Yes, he create his own style of playing. I'm happy this rare solo concert is released on this CD, he didn't make enough records. (Joachim Kühn)
Many musicians consider Jean-François Jenny-Clark to be one of the greatest bass players of his generation, and I now realise that over the years and in many different projects and contexts, I was fortunate enough to share my rhythmic role with one of the greatest contemporary improvisers. Jean-François knew his instrument so well that he was able to assert his strong personality so quickly that it wasn’t always easy to adapt to his idea of tempo – it could be fragmented, loosely defined, deliberately variable or merely hinted at. His premature death makes one suspect that he never fully realised the importance of his personal contribution to music, nor the admiration we all felt for him. (Daniel Humair)
Concert recorded in stereo direct take in Avignon to the "Théatre des Halles" on August 9th, 1994 during the festival BASS 94.
