description « What we all wanted right from the start was to make some rock-inspired music in an inventive idiom using a blend of contempo- rary and acoustic electronic music. We’d keep the essence of what we’d learned and liked in contemporary music, but inject fresh material into it by composing, playing and improvising in a new way. This is group work (as a pose to individual) that can emerge as the music is underway, with the composition always depending on the meta- instrument represented by the group ; so at the actual performance, everything happens in phase. But the rock side of this is also a particular sound that can be as distorted as required; it’s the pleasure, too, of creating metallic textures, amplified bar structures, repetitive beats: a phantom full to bursting with energy and generous sound and gesture. The other but equally present side here consists of the infinitely precise tunings, attention to detail, the desire for balanced phrasing, an almost obsessive tendency to think in terms of a stage play, with the flow of energies and music always under control. We compose “pieces”, in other words, multi-faceted objects that are explored over and over again, to give a different version each time, so that we’re actually creating a made-to-measure repertoire for each occasion, that always tries to highlight the qualities of each player within the universe we all implicitly defend.”
